TALAT WRITES A LETTER TO BAN

--TALAT WRITES A LETTER TO BAN
--“GREEK CYPRIOT’S ADMINISTRATION’S ACTIVITIES   REGARDING DELIMITATION OF MARITIME JURISDICTION AREAS IN EASTERN MEDITTARENEAN VIOLATE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS AND INTERESTS OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS”

Nicosia,  4 December 08 (T.A.K):-President Mehmet Ali Talat stressed that the Greek Cypriot Administration’s  unilateral activities regarding the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas in the Eastern Mediterranean before a comprehensive settlement prejudge and violate the fundamental rights and interests of Turkish Cypriot People who were the equal co-founding partner in the 1960 sea areas of the Island of Cyprus.

President Mehmet Ali Talat send a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nation Ban Ki-Moon regarding  Greek Cypriot  Administration’s exploration of oil and natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean. In his letter Talat  assessed the claims found in  the letter  that had been sent to Ban by Christofias too.

Stating that those activities on the part of Greek Cypriot side are in contra version of international law, “It is an established rule that maritime delimitation in a semi-enclosed sea like Eastern Mediterranean could only be effected by agreement, with the consent of all parties concerned and by respecting their mutual rights. Since there is no such agreement over the exclusive economic zone in the said region, the Greek Cypriot Administration has no right whatsoever to initiate any  activity there, including ‘exploratory surveys’” said Talat.

Reminding that the sensitive issue of delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas for Cyprus had been an important aspect of negotiation process under the UN auspices in 2004 Talat stressed that UN comprehensive settlement plan addressed this subject with the understanding that it was to be determined after a comprehensive political settlement in Cyprus.

Underlining that Turkey, as a neighboring country, also had legitimate and legal rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean and thus that issue was not limited only to Cyprus, Talat emphasized that Christofias made false allegations  in his letter.

Talat reiterated that despite the negative stance by the Greek Cypriot Administration the Turkish Cypriot side would continue to take part in the full-fledged negotiations in good faith and do its utmost to reach a comprehensive settlement on the basis of the UN established parameters and body of work.
